People see the phrase โ€œhealth testedโ€ and assume itโ€™s something a vet can do in a quick office visit.

But true health testing is far beyond a checkup.

Behind that phrase is:

โ€ข Thousands of dollars

โ€ข Hard choices

โ€ข Knowledge

โ€ข Planning

โ€ข And a whole lot of protecting future puppies

Hereโ€™s what all that testing REALLY means in our program

๐Ÿ. ๐–๐ก๐ฒ ๐Ž๐…๐€ ๐“๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐Œ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ

OFA isnโ€™t a โ€œstamp.โ€

Itโ€™s how we screen for structural issues that cause pain, mobility problems, and arthritis later in life.

In our program, we test:

โ€ข Hips (hip dysplasia)

โ€ข Elbows (elbow dysplasia)

โ€ข Patellas (luxating knees)

โ€ข Cardiac (heart conditions)

โ€ข Eyes / CAER (inherited eye disease)

A dog can look perfectly healthy and athletic in their younger years and still fail OFA.

Breeding without OFAs risks:

โ€ข Dogs living in pain far too young

โ€ข Families facing expensive surgeries and long-term meds

โ€ข Puppies unable to live the active life their people envisioned

OFA isnโ€™t being โ€œextra.โ€

Itโ€™s preventing avoidable suffering plain and simple.

Genetic testing looks inside the dog at things you canโ€™t see on the outside.

Most inherited conditions are recessive, meaning:

โ€ข Clear = no mutation

โ€ข Carrier = one copy, healthy but can pass it on

โ€ข Affected = two copies, at risk for disease

If you breed Carrier ร— Carrier, you risk:

โ€ข 25% affected puppies

โ€ข 50% carriers

โ€ข 25% clear

That โ€œ25% affectedโ€ isnโ€™t just a statistic

it can mean a puppy who slowly goes blind, loses mobility, or lives with chronic pain.

In our program:

โ€ข Carrier ร— Clear = fine

โ€ข Carrier ร— Carrier = absolutely not

Genetic testing allows us to prevent what we can prevent.

This gene controls the classic doodle look:

โ€ข Teddy-bear face

โ€ข Brows

โ€ข Beards

โ€ข Overall โ€œfluff factorโ€

Hereโ€™s what the results mean:

โ€ข F/F- strong furnishings, the full doodle look

โ€ข F/IC- furnished, but sometimes slightly less full

โ€ข IC/IC- improper coat, flat/retriever-like look

None of these are โ€œbad,โ€ but in our program we intentionally breed furnished coats to maintain consistency in the doodle appearance.

๐Ÿ’. ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐’๐ก๐ž๐๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐†๐ž๐ง๐ž (๐Œ๐‚๐Ÿ“๐‘)

(based on Embark + UC Davis VGL)

This gene helps predict shedding:

โ€ข TT- lowest/light shedding

โ€ข CT- moderate shedding

โ€ข CC- heavier shedding

Coat isnโ€™t just about shedding curl length also matters:

โ€ข CC = straight (-/-)

โ€ข CT = wavy (-/+)

โ€ข TT = curly (+/+)

And hereโ€™s where many people get confused:

A dog can be F/F (fully furnished) AND still have a straight coat

straight does NOT automatically mean โ€œimproper coat.โ€

Personally, straight and wavy coats are my favorite for families:

they are often easier to brush, maintain, and keep healthy long-term.

Planning coats isnโ€™t about choosing the โ€œcutest.โ€

Itโ€™s about:

โ€ข Helping allergy-sensitive families avoid a bad match

โ€ข Setting realistic grooming expectations

โ€ข Matching coat type to lifestyle and ability

๐Ÿ“. ๐–๐ก๐ฒ ๐ˆโ€™๐ฆ ๐“๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐ข๐œ๐ค๐ฒ

Some people think all this testing is โ€œextra.โ€

But to me?

Itโ€™s the bare minimum.

These decisions shape:

โ€ข A dogโ€™s long-term comfort

โ€ข A familyโ€™s experience raising that dog

โ€ข The future and reputation of doodles as a whole

I donโ€™t test to say I tested.

I test so I can use the results:

โ€ข To avoid risky pairings

โ€ข To produce consistent coats and temperaments

โ€ข To protect my dogs and my families

โ€ข To build healthier generations

This isnโ€™t โ€œjust putting two dogs together.โ€

Itโ€™s science.

Itโ€™s education.

Itโ€™s intention.

Itโ€™s heart.

And yes a whole lot of prayer, too.

If youโ€™ve ever wondered why ethical breeders charge what they do,

This is a huge part of the why.

To help you understand the differences, Iโ€™ve included photos of our own dogs below showcasing curl types and coat types- including F/F, F/IC, IC, and the variations of wavy ,curly coats.
